Whatever you thought you knew about canopies, hit reset. Petra signals a first for canopy piloting: the hyper performance wing.

The JYRO Petra is the arrival of a game-changing adjustment in the way we think about flying parachutes. With a high roll rate, a long recovery arc and high maximal glide ratio, Petra delivers unrivalled power in the turn, plane out and flare. Combined with a highly elliptical planform and very high sweep, a record-breaking wing is born.

canopy lead time: 22 weeks

Design

The JYRO (previously Icarus Canopies by NZ Aerosports) Petra will change you forever. She will make you do things, bad things, nasty distances that you thought were impossible. Her secret is a high end never-seen-before design made of polyurethane-coated nylon that adds efficiency and reduces drag from an already ridiculously fast and agile wing. Snap, turn, whipping around and rippin’ it on the pond in ways you never considered trying – Petra is like a bike pump for your balls.

She emerged from JYRO (previously NZ Aerosports’) Summer of Love R&D Project. With founder Paul ‘Jyro’ Martyn’s design expertise and Aerodynamics engineer Julien Peelman’s knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), computer modeling of airflow was used to analyze and predict the performance of a canopy’s shape.

Petra stood out from the previous prototypes. She was the result of over 30 years of JYRO (previously Icarus Canopies by NZ Aerosports) design experience and Julien’s fresh input.

She is completely different to any other canopy currently on the market, built from the ground up with entirely new panel shaping and trim. She’s the sexiest canopy around – and she can swoop-for-fucken-miles!

Features

Flight Characteristics

What can I expect when I fly the JYRO Petra for the first time?
Like a confident, strong woman, Petra takes a little getting to know. But once you do you’ll never look back. Her harness sensitivity feels a bit unnerving at first – but it’s all in the hips baby!

When you open, pick a point as a reference, widen your chest strap and slowly remove the panties RDS. Once off, take your time putting it away, and keep thinking about those hips! Once the brakes are off you might feel like you’re back in freefall. This is a seriously fast parachute. Everything will feel overly reactive. Harness, toggles, fronts and rears require subtle inputs until you get to know her a little better. If you don’t treat her right, she WILL bite!

Who is Petra for?
The JYRO Petra is a full sail competition specific swoop canopy. She isn’t designed for everyday jumping, or the everyday jumper, but for the experienced competitive canopy pilot who has thousands of jumps on small highly loaded crossbraced canopies.

To order a JYRO Petra you MUST have:

  • 700+ jumps on a 2.2wl or above
  • 250+ jumps in the last 12 months
  • A reference from a respected coach/swooper or Petra/Peregrine pilot
  • Have competed at least once in the last 12 months (or competed 3 or more times in Open in the last 3 years)

If you fall narrowly outside these minimums but have something else to take into consideration (i.e. high percentage of swoop specific coached jumps or lots of competition experience but not within the last year) let us know

Am I ready for Petra?
Do you have a good coach? Does your coach say you are ready? Do you meet the requirements above? Petra is a professional tool for pilots who fly for food. If you don’t have a coach to ask if you’re ready, then you’re not ready. This wing is a custom, special order item with options not found anywhere else in the industry.

Openings
Petra opening are firm but not hard. She is totally fine to be taken terminal. Her terminal openings can be described as brisk, but totally doable.

Toggles
Highly sensitive, especially at higher wing loadings.

Stall Point
Warning: High speed stalls are very possible if inputs are too abrupt.

Rears
Range, range and more range. Very responsive and powerful. We promise, you’ll love them.

Fronts
Very light, easy to manipulate even from full drive.

Performance
This is the most high performance wing you can buy – so much so that we coined a new phrase with the JYRO Petra – the hyper-performance wing.

The Dive
Very long and steep. She hisses.

Recovery
Long recovery – requires pilot input for level flight.

Flare
Very powerful and responsive.

Pack Volume

This data has been gathered from the field and is a guide only. Packing technique, age of the canopy and container all have a part to play in whether a canopy will fit in your rig.

  1. Find your UPT / Javelin container size along the top of the chart (side if on mobile)
  2. The green section shows the Petra size that will comfortably fit in your rig.
  3. The white sections show sizes on the tight or loose side.

We are still gathering data to make these charts more accurate and plan to include other containers in the future. If you have a Petra in your container and it is not listed on chart here, let us know at info@jyro.com

I just wish they made them small enough for me. Sell me a 53 and I’ll give 5 star rating.

The swoopers choice. There is no other canopy for me. Except for the Leia, for my everyday jumping. If most of my jumps wasn’t back to backs, I’d have two Petras. But I wanna be nice to my packers… This canopy feels like a part of me when flying it. It’s an extension of me. Smooth openings, even the ones on the harder side, when deploying in terminal. The Petra is a game changer. When you think you’re out of power, it just want to keep going. The feeling I get after landing the Petra, even on those early season 90’s, is like falling in love. I shiver on the landing area after a Petra-landing. My jaw muscles are sore of smiling after a day of Petra-flying… I LOVE PETRA.

As far as wings go this is the wing that set the stage to get all other manufactures to develop a better wing. The Petra has set the stage with great flare power and rear risers that go for days. The carry of this canopy still to this day trips me out.

Petra is by a mile the best performing Skydiving Canopy on the Market!
I have accumulated about 2000 Jumps on it and various sizes and flown it with many other Wings.
Its range is incredible. I used it for Competiton, Showjumps, every day jumping (terminal), flocking, XRW, Freestyle and many other types of jumps and is still unquestionably my no. 1 weapon of choice.
Although it’s hard to imagine that there might be room for improvement, I already can’t wait for the 2nd generation of this beast of a wing.
    Note:
It’s a top level high performance Parachute and is not for everyone. A high level of experience, good packing skills and being a very current jumper are required to use this wing for what it’s designed for – having an incredible amount of fun with an incredible amount of performance!

I believe that this canopy changed the history of all other canopies, as in Formula 1 where cars are used as a testing laboratory so that factories can develop technologies that will be used in the production of street cars, the Petra was the nzaerosports team testing laboratory. I think the Petra can be called the mother (or father) of all modern canopies, a real revolution in terms of flight performance and in the materials used to make canopies. A real flying machine, I love to fly my Petra in competitions, hop and pops and definitely the best XRW canopy ever tested among our group of pilots.
There is anything more to talk about this canopy. If you are looking for a Formula 1 of canopies then this is your canopy.

Just like the Leia, I have heard not to try it unless I have the money to buy one. Well, one day I was given one to try by my mentor, and I didn’t have the money to buy it but I tried. Next thing you know I used my credit card and ordered mine right away. No regrets. I use mine while working, doing AFF and video camera jumps. I love it for freestyles and XRW as well. Thank you Icarus for creating this beauty!

The Petra started the Schumann (curved nose) design in high performance skydive wings, every other HP wing in the sport is now designed around it. It’s the most intuitive, beautiful wing in the world, it feels like an extension of your body, it floats at speeds it should fall out of the sky at and dives at freefall speeds. It responds to everything you do and you can fly it almost entirely from harness. It was the best parachute in the world in 2012 and to this day does things no other manufacturer can emulate.

The Petra is an amazing piece of modern engineering. It took all we knew about CP and pushed it so far forward that it created a new category of wings all on its own. Its so powerful and aggressive that after creating it, NZA had to create a “slower” version of the Petra, the Leia! This new breed of hyper performance wings came in to push the discipline even further, and the best tool for the job currently is for sure the Petra. The openings are amazing, if you take care with the pack job you will probably have one or two off heading openings every 100 jumps. The snivel portion of the opening is quite fast, but not too fast where the slider immediately comes down, it stays up there for just enough time to slow you down and inflate the rest of the wing. Its actually so good to have a shorter snivel in these wings because thats one of the more complicated portions of the opening, since we have high speed air going through the wing but none of our controls are functioning yet at 100%. Nevertheless the Petra eliminates this problem all together and gives you nice, snappy and comfortable openings that make it the perfect tool for any regular freefall jump, whether it be camera flying (unless you’re carrying 2 full frame dslr’s and a bunch of gopros and camcorders), coaching, any type of freefly jump and maybe even AFF. The only concern it the WL, if you load it at 2.8 and above and you do a turn bigger than 450′ and you use the full RDS on freefall it’s probably smart to pull a little higher than usual, maybe 4500feet, just to have time to deal with the slider all the other shenanigans. As you can probably tell the trim on this wing is not what we can call flat, not even close!!! While the toogles are stowed you might even for a moment think “this is a pretty normal glide” but after you pop those toogles well, you are pretty much in freefall again. You will actually feel the legstraps lose their pressure on your leg because the air resistance on your body will literally start to lift you! Now fronts, they are light, and easy to manage, you can easily hold on to them for the first 180′ of the turn to really get that speed going. No turbulence or loss of pressure on the trailing edge whatsoever when you alter the trim of the wing and gain speed, which is a problem some other brands face. The harness is super sensitive and if you are not used to the sensitivity it might be overwhelming, you might even over rotate on the first few landings, especially if you are used to whipping it hard in the end of the turn. You will get used to the harness flight super fast and love it!! The recovery arc is perfect! You can finish the turn super high and she will stay in a dive for a long time, and even when she recovers unless you use the rears she will keep falling. In the first landings you might finish high, from what i’ve seen, and the wing will lose a lot of power, but when you start to really nail the recovery arc you will truly start to feel the power of the Petra. Work on making your body area as small as possible because you will come with so much speed and the recovery arc is quite long, 3-4seconds so if you relax and stretch your body you will lose tons of power. The rears are incredibly powerful, and will drive the canopy out of the recovery are with tremendous amounts of power. The best way to use the rears during the recovery arc in my opinion is to again make yourself small and create less resistance and let the canopy recover by itself during the first two thirds of the recovery arc, and then to give it a little bit of rears, touch the water and relieve the pressure on the rears ever so slightly for about the first 30m, to let the canopy sort of regain some pressure and not break it in half from too much rears. After the first 30m you can give it rears and start to lift off, you will make it past the exit gates already starting to climb and just barely break the beam (make sure you do though) and when you finally let her show her true colours and really freely lift off you see why the Petra dominates! The rears are huge and will fly you for about 60% of the course, but the toogles will quickly steal the show. Toogles are truly immense on this wing. The slow air speed flight characteristics are truly the stuff of dreams. She will fly in toogles until the last bit of speed has been used, almost no speed will be wasted on dragging your ass on the grass. If you have upwinds you will literally have loft until you come to a dead stop. Stand up landings every time with upwinds and crosswinds, and even some downwinds. Using her at WL2.2/2.6 is also awesome for zone acc, because of the power of those toogles you can really shut her down and get the box standing up no issues whatsoever. Beast of a wing, after flying a 69, 67, 65 and 62 I can assure you she is perfect for Zone Acc, speed, distance, XRW and many more things!! Just not so good for wingsuiting large suits, ask me how I know hahah. My favorite wing for sure!
