In 2010, Michael Vaughan from the Australian CRW Team Ookoonono came to New Zealand to run a canopy piloting course and help us with prototype testing. He told us he wanted to use smaller wings for CRW to increase the wing loading and reactivity. But he confessed that even though he swooped competitively and had been jumping CRW canopies for years, he would be scared to land a smaller 7-Cell.
Following our love for new stuff and choosing to ignore the size of the competitive CF market, we decided to help by designing a high end CRW prototype. Our goal was to make a canopy to bring back the pilot as the only limiting factor - a modern canopy that would fly fast with high maneuver capability, a wide range of speed, and great safe landings.
Using the new tools we had just developed to design Petra and the knowledge accumulated by hundreds of computational fluid dynamics simulations, we knew it would be a slightly elliptical, cross-braced canopy.
Making it a 5-cell gave us the opportunity to reduce the number of lines (and so the chance for an illegal dock) while maintaining complete control of the shape. In an attempt to get rid of all the useless line groups, we first designed and tested a 3-cell. It was landed successfully but had poor flight characteristics. But the 5-cell was an immediate hit, and we kept working with Ookoonono to improve it.
The Matrix II is a next generation 5-cell CF canopy using proven cross brace technology with less lines, it opens great, flies solid, handles hard docks and keeps flying no matter what.
The trim is not set too steep but the reduced drag still means that the Matrix II dives more than a 7-Cell. The result is that the wing can be flown efficiently with a small amount of brakes and you just need to release it to accelerate.
The canopy is responsive on all inputs, the fronts are light and the rears have tons of power and range. The openings are firm but not slammers and are reliable and consistent with high wing loadings.
We know it’s a bold move for a conservative market but it’s a change we are proud to sign our name to.
You’ve got nothing to lose except a couple of cells!
