Whatever you thought you knew about canopies, hit reset. Petra signals a first for NZ Aerosports and canopy piloting: the hyper performance wing.

Petra is the arrival of a game-changing adjustment in the way we think about flying our parachutes. With a high roll rate, a long recovery arc and high maximal glide ratio, Petra delivers unrivalled power in the turn, plane out and flare. Combined with a highly elliptical planform and very high sweep, a record-breaking wing is born.

Petra will change you forever. She will make you do things, bad things, nasty distances that you thought were impossible. Her secret is a high end never-seen-before design made of polyurethane-coated nylon that adds efficiency and reduces drag from an already ridiculously fast and agile wing. Snap, turn, whipping around and rippin’ it on the pond in ways you never considered trying – Petra is like a bike pump for your balls.

Petra is a professional tool for pilots who fly for food. If you don't have a coach to ask if you're ready, then you're not ready. This wing is a custom, special order item with options not found anywhere else in the industry. Put your name on the list today and get one step closer to everything you need to put you on the medal table.

The Daedalus JPX, fondly known as Petra, is the latest high performance wing from NZ Aerosports.

Born in the Summer of Love:

Petra emerged from NZ Aerosports’ latest Summer of Love R&D Project. With owner Paul ‘Jyro’ Martyn’s design expertise and Aerodynamics engineer Julien Peelman’s knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), they use the computer modeling of airflow to analyze and predict the performance of a canopy’s shape.

Petra stood out from the previous prototypes. She is the result of over 25 years of the Icarus design experience at NZ Aerosports and Julien’s fresh input.

The design uses a similar standard to the JVX in terms of distortion reduction with crossbraces and 27 cells but that’s where the similarity ends. Petra is completely different to any other canopy currently on the market, built from the ground up with entirely new panel shaping and trim. She’s the sexiest canopy around – and she can swoop for miles!

Petra’s Rap Sheet:

Petra had an impressive debut at the PD Big Boy Pants event in July, with Nick Batsch setting a new distance world record of 222.45m (729ft). One month later Nick took out the Pink Open in Klatovy and the FAI World Cup also; first in distance, speed and overall. He also won the 2011 US CP nationals on Petra.

Patrick Boulongne came 2nd in the European Championships and 6th overall at the World Cup with Petra in his first competition with her. He went on to win the 2011 French Canopy Piloting Nationals.

Brice Bernier won the 2011 Italian CP Nationals on her, and came 2nd in the 2011 French CP nationals behind Patrick Boulongne.

Who is Petra for?
Petra is a full sail competition specific swoop canopy. She isn’t designed for everyday jumping, or the everyday jumper, but for the experienced competitive canopy pilot who has thousands of jumps on small highly loaded crossbraced canopies.
To order a Petra you MUST have:

  • 700+ jumps on a 2.2wl or above
  • 250+ jumps in the last 12 months
  • A reference from a respected coach/swooper or Petra/Peregrine pilot
  • Have competed at least once in the last 12 months (or competed 3 or more times in Open in the last 3 years)

If you fall narrowly outside these minimums but have something else to take into consideration (i.e. high percentage of swoop specific coached jumps or lots of competition experience but not within the last year) let us know

Am I ready for Petra?
Do you have a good coach? Does your coach say you are ready? Do you meet the requirements above?

Will my order be accepted?
If you have lots of jumps on small highly loaded crossbraced canopies, are competing to a reasonable level and can supply some good references of your ability, we’d love to make you a Petra!
If we’re not sure, we’ll send you a few more questions, and if you’re not quite there yet, we’ll keep your contact details and check where you’re up to in about a year. We want everyone to fly the canopy they want to, but we also try to keep you safe

What is the price?
4000USD including an RDS and spare lineset.

What are my options?
Not much. Everything you need for competition is already included and ready to go.
Petra does not come with a D-bag attachment point as standard.
Lines are Vectran 300 and Petra is only available with Sail fabric.
The powerband (upper nose) is required to be black and the internals (ribs and crossbraces) are required to be white for production reasons.
Sail fabric colour options are a bit more restricted than ZP and you’ll see what’s available when you go to the colour picker.

Can I demo a Petra?
We don’t currently have a demo program. If you order one and after ten jumps decide you need a different size or type of canopy, we’ll switch it for you.

We are so confident that you’ll love Petra that we promise if you are not happy after ten jumps, you can send your Petra back for a full refund minus shipping costs.

What size Petra should I buy?
Most people enjoy a size 3-4 sqft smaller than what they’re currently jumping or competing on.

We’ve heard great things about a 2.8 wingloading or thereabouts on a Petra - but picking up a size according to your current canopy is much more relevant than trying to match WL recommendations.

What is Petra’s pack volume like?
It seems that Petra packs between 25 and 35% bigger than a JVX of the same size. Make sure to use an appropriate container with a big enough bag. A split bag or Axe bag can help prevent malfunctions caused by tight packing.

Here is a compilation of some feedback we’ve received about pack volume. (NOTE: These are not recommendations, they are feedback from people jumping Petra. Results can vary depending on personal preference and packing technique)

Can I take my Petra terminal?
Yes. Petra opens well sub-terminal and terminal. Check out our Petra openings video.
However, using your Petra for regular terminal openings might reduce the fabric life span.

What’s different about sail fabric?
Sail fabric comes from the paragliding industry. It is less stretchy and keeps the canopy in a better shape. It also gives it some extra rigidity, which increases its performance.
One the other hand, Sail fabric is not as strong or durable as ZP. It needs to be handled more carefully (more details on this will be given prior to order).

What colours can I have?
Petra is made entirely of sail fabric. The colours we have in stock are more limited than normal ZP fabric and you will see what we have available in the Colour Picker. We hope to extend the colour pallet sometime in 2015.

The internals(cross braces & ribs) come in white only for production reasons. The Powerband comes only in black.

Can I have a logo or SkyArt on Petra?
We can’t print on Petra due to its special fabric but we can sew simple logos. This will increase the packing volume. Ask us what we can do.

What line type should I have?
Petra currently comes with Vectran 300 or Vectran 400.

Can I be sponsored to fly a Petra?
Petra is in high demand, and as a World Record Breaking canopy, we aren’t offering a lot of sponsorships for her. However, if you feel you have something to bring us, ask !

What is the Lead time?
Please see the lead time in the top right of the website as an indication (though this is subject to change). When accepted your order and receive a deposit your order you’ll get an email advising lead time and other details.
